The Project
Businesses in the Stourton area of Leeds are benefitting from increased flood protection following the completion of a new 730 metre flood defence wall and property level protection, such as flood gates and demountable barriers.
This particular project has involved supplying 17 aluminium demountable barriers set into the wall and cast stone copings that can be installed by the businesses across door openings in the event of a flood, where surface water flooding could occur due to the water being prevented from discharging into the canal or river as normal. The works will provide a 1 in 200 year standard of protection to 88 existing businesses in the Stourton Industrial Estate, safeguard over 4,000 existing jobs in the area and help to protect access to the M1.
The Problem
Our client had previously worked with our cast stone team on previous flood defence schemes and choose Procter Cast Stone for this project. There were specific programme constraints meaning that products needed to be manufactured and delivered to site within 4 weeks.
Compressive test results for the copings supplies to the client were well in excess of the minimum UKCSA standards.
The Solution
We manufactured robust bespoke wall copings that were required to specific cut outs for the steel posts. Having had previous experience of working on many flood alleviation schemes throughout the UK we worked closely with the specifiers and our client to make sure that the stone was functional as well as sympathetic to the environment.
The copings will help protect the surrounding area for many years to come and the client finished the project within the timeframe allowed.
